As for my service - Although we trained constantly for service in Vietnam, there was always an arising issue which canceled our deployment:  After the MLK assasination, the 6th cav was sent to D.C. for riot duty which lasted almost a month, then the Pueblo was siezed by N. Korea and we were on standby for deployment there.  Next there was unrest in Germany with upcoming elections and several of us were sent to 3rd armor div., just in time for Russia's invasion of Czechoslovakia.  I was then levied to the 11th cav, which was in-country at the time.  However, with only 3 weeks left to my service, they sent me back to 33rd armor; just in time to be sent home for separation.  I still can hear the explanation:  "The Army has a purpose for everything it does!"

I felt fortunate at the time to not have fired a shot in anger, and at the same time, quite guilty because I lost many good friends and was not with them.

For your information.....my mother's maiden name was Dixon.  Her family came from Kentucky and had migrated there from Virginia, according to my daughter, who does a lot of genealogy research.  The earliest our records show is one Hardin Samuel Dixon, born 1847 and died 1913.  This may be a smaller world than we thought.
