Lesley Staite's Quest for her G.I. father, John Chermack-Powell (2)

I was told that my 'father'  was an American soldier that was stationed near by our town, during the war in 1944. An Aunt told me  that his name was John, perhaps in his mid thirty's and something to do with Tanks, and  had been killed in action at the front in December  of '44. My mother remembered that his name was John, he came from Illinois, was 32, and left the local base October 1944, and he had a foreign sounding last name.

I searched through the American war memorials to find Johns from Illinois aged 32 that were killed in action, assuming he must be buried overseas.. No luck.. I surfed the web like a fiend, for sure I would come up with something anything.  I found  nothing,

So, where do I start, what do I need to know, how do I go about it....
